THE BIG QUESTION: What natural resources provided new economic growth opportunities and motivation for settlers to cross the Mississippi River to begin settling Missouri and how are those resources useful today?

STATION 1: POSTCARD

You will need:  4 x 6 index card, pencil, sticker stamp, rubber stamp

  • Write on lines: replace green words with your own words

  • Stamp it, cancel it with the rubber stamp, and place in mailbox at center

 

STATION 2: PERSUASIVE ESSAY: Moving to Missouri

MOVING TO MISSOURI: Your family has decided to move West across the Mississippi into Missouri.

You will write a persuasive essay explaining why your Missouri region is the best place for your new home.

To earn an A, your essay:

  • Has an effective beginning, middle, and end
  • Has 5 paragraphs (intro, 3 supporting, conclusion)
  • Clearly addresses the topic in complete sentences
  • Each paragraph has at least 3 sentences (topic, detail, detail)
  • Includes 3 natural resources and their economic opportunities
  • Features correct information about the characteristics of a Missouri region
  • Contains few mechanical errors (grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, etc.)
  • Includes pre-writing organizer

1) Prewriting: Organize your thoughts for writing by filling in information on the persuasion map.

2) Use your prewriting thoughts to complete a rough draft.

3) Choose 1 student to peer edit your essay.

3) After you have edited your rough draft, type your final copy.

4) Print final copy, put in folder, and turn it in

STATION 3: COMMERCIAL

  • Type a script for 60-second TV commercial on a Word document
  • Use information from your brochure, essays, posters, research, etc
  • You may add music, show props, dress-up....whatever it takes to convince your audience to move to your region
  • Include the catchy slogan from your brochure
  • Print completed, corrected script and place in your folder

Work with your director to combine your ideas....Remember: you could be “hired” by the “governor”!

Airtime is very expensive so your commercial must be 60 seconds…no more, no less! 

STATION 4: RELIEF MAP

You will need: cardboard flat, glue, organic materials, research notes

You will build a model of your region using only natural materials. Be sure to include any water sources, forests, plains, mountains, tall grasses, etc.

For this project there will be three expectations:

  • 6 or more natural resources
  • only includes organic material, NO purchased materials allowed or lose points
  • shows originality and creativity

 

STATION 5: BROCHURE

  • Summarize information from essays into 1 paragraph
  • Choose natural resources and economic opportunities for each resource
  • Open a brochure template and enter above information
  • Include 1 picture.  Be sure to fill in each section correctly. 
  • Create a catchy slogan
  • Follow MY EXAMPLE....include all the parts 
  • SAVE YOUR WORK! 

I will check brochures before printing. DO NOT PRINT!

STATION 6: $MAKING IT ON OUR OWN$

  • Practice 'Be Your Own Boss'
  • Choose 1 natural resource from your region that could make you money
  • You only have $100 to invest in your new business venture so don't waste it! This is all the money you have so you're taking a risk.
  • Discuss with your 'business partners' and write your ideas:

 

  1. Are we going to make a good ? OR Will we provide a service?
  2. What product or service will we choose? Make list and circle your choice
  3. How will we make this product to sell? OR How will we provide this service?
  4. What tools do we need? *Remember there are no stores
  5. What supplies do we need?
  6. How will we get those supplies? Will we barter? Will we trade?
  7. Who will buy our product? OR Who will use our service?
  8. What is the name of our company?
  9. How can we advertise for our business?
  10. How much will we charge for our product? OR How much will we charge for our service?

 

  • All of your 'employees' will get 25c per hour
  • On your balance sheet, record everything you spend or earn
  • As you build your business, summarize events on gameboard poster
  • Make your products to sell on market day OR gather your supplies and make equipment for your service
  • Advertise and....
